Dear DIEry; I have often wondered if the stories as seen on TV could ever come true in real life. It has been said that art imitates life as life sometimes imitates art. There is this TV drama called "House" which is about this exocentric doctor who has amazing skills to help very complicated medical problems. I once saw an episode where a Guatemalan couple came to his hospital traveled far and spent most of their own, family, and friends money to get there because the husband had read an article of Dr. House exploits in medicine and he wanted the best to keep his wife from dying as doctors in their own country had given them no hope of survival. Now, this is a fictional story and given the situation that these people were illegal immigrants, came to this hospital where Dr. House was and was admitted into a private room, let alone admitted at all with no money is amazing to say the least.
Now, here is another story, this time based on factual events, about a professional boxer who was wrongfully imprisoned for 20 years. And in the height of a media frenzy, had drawn the support of many famous people including Bob Dylan to aide and bring awareness of the injustice of his imprisonment. for a year or two at least he had the sympathy and support of a nation, but little did it accomplish in getting him freed. It was not until a few people had learned of his forgotten story half a decade later and befriended him, that they mounted a 8 year battle which finally won his freedom after 20 years of unjust imprisonment.
what do these stories have in common, though one of fiction and one of not? They are stories of a few making the difference to one. The perseverance or contribution beyond charity and good will that made a life and death impact on someone's life. Unfortunately, though one of these stories resides in a writer's pen and the other in true life, the common denominator is that this is simply a one in a million event and can be placed upon the shelf with fantasies, miracles, and fairytales. They are simply made to give hope in a world of disbelief and hypocrisies which won't ever make this a rule rather than exception.
A friend of mines once said, guests (or a guests in your life) are like fresh caught fish. Tasty and appreciated for the first few days, stink and rotting shortly thereafter...
